Trivia Question 12/8/11 – Sneakers

KedsQUESTION:

The first mass-produced canvas topped, rubber soled “sneakers” called Keds were first sold in what year?

ANSWER:

1917

EXPLANATION:

US Rubber introduced the sneaker with its Keds brand.  When choosing a name, the initial choice was Peds, from the Latin meaning foot, but someone else held that trademark. They became known as “sneakers” because the rubber soles allowed sneaking around silently.  Keds were first mass-marketed as canvas-top “sneakers” in 1917.
