Trivia Question 9/26/13 – Happy Birthday Google

Google LogoThis month we say “Happy Birthday” to Google.  Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Stanford University and started the little company that most of us rely on every day called Google. We know about the Google search engine you use to find the answers to the weekly Trivia Questions.  If you use an Android phone, that operating system was developed by Google. You may have a Gmail account for email, use Chrome as your web browser, store and organize photos with Picassa and watch videos on YouTube.  All of these are Google products.

QUESTION:

Based on the date it was incorporated, how old is Google?

ANSWER:

15

EXPLANATION:

Larry Page was 22 and Sergey Brin was 21 when they met each other as Ph.D. students at Stanford University in 1995.  They began collaborating on a search engine called “BackRub” which ran on servers at Stanford for more than a year before it got shut down for using up too much of the University’s bandwidth.

They renamed their search engine Google which is a misspelling of the word “googol” meaning the number one followed by 100 zeros.  This was to signify that the search engine was intended to provide large quantities of information.

They incorporated Google on September 4th, 1998, making Google 15 years old this year.  The company was run out of a friend’s garage in Menlo Park, California.

In the 15 years it’s been in business Google has done pretty well. There is of course the Google search engine which uses more than one million servers in data centers around the world, processes over one billion search requests and 24 petabytes of data each day. (One petabyte is 1000 terabytes).

Google has moved increasingly into communications hardware: it partners with major electronics manufacturers in production of its high-end Nexus devices and acquired Motorola Mobility in May 2012 for 12 and half billion dollars. So now if you buy a Motorola cell phone, it was made by Google.  In 2012, a fiber-optic infrastructure was installed in Kansas City to facilitate a Google Fiber broadband service.

Today Google operates 70 offices in more than 40 countries, employs over 44,000 people and made a profit of almost $11 billion last year.
