Trivia Question for February 20, 2014 – Orbiting the Earth

Friendship 7On this date in history…  52 years ago on February 20, 1962, Astronaut John Glen became the third person and the first American to orbit the Earth.  He completed 3 Earth orbits in the Mercury spacecraft Friendship 7 in a mission that lasted less than 5 hours.

QUESTION:

In total, how many people have orbited the Earth?  (Extra credit question: How many people are currently in space orbiting the Earth?)

ANSWER:

533 Total in orbit.  6 are currently in orbit.

EXPLANATION:

533 people have orbited the Earth since the first person, Yuri Gagarin in 1961.

There are currently 6 people in space:

  • Michael Hopkins (since September 25, 2013)
  • Oleg Kotov (since September 25, 2013)
  • Sergei Ryazansky (since September 25, 2013)
  • Richard Mastracchio (since November 7 2013)
  • Mikhail Tyurin (since November 7 2013)
  • Koichi Wakata (since November 7 2013)
